Pussy Riot’s Canadian connection – UPDATED

The woman you see in the video is Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, who has been jailed for many months now. Her young daughter, who hasn’t been allowed to see her mother, tells everyone that Putin has locked her mother in a cage.

The rough translation of the video’s first minute is below and it raises serious questions: Is Nadezhda Tolokonnikova a Canadian? Why won’t the Harper government step up and help her? If she’s indeed a Canadian, we need to get her home.

Yet we’ve heard nothing from the federal government. If they won’t help, will the Liberals? Will the NDP?

Our government has no other choice but to get involved. And if they refuse, we deserve to know why they are willing to allow a woman, who may be a Canadian, to languish in a Russian jail.

Will the federal government get involved? If not, why not?

Here’s Tolokonnikova’s Canadian Permanent Resident Card, courtesy of Yahoo! news. Now the Harper government has no excuses. Zero. Time for Canada to step up.

0:00 NARRATOR:  Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, 22 years old, permanent resident of Canada, although would not confirm that.
0:07 VOICE:  Tell me please, in 2011 you received permanent residency status in Canada.
0:12 NADEZHDA It’s not that.
0:15 VOICE Have not received?
0:17 NADEZHDA No. I have been to Canada, and I have right to do so, but I have not received permanent residency status.
0:24 VOICE How did you get to Canada?
0:26 NADEZHDA How did I get to Canada? With visa.
0:30 VOICE: No permanent residency…
0:31 NADEZHDA I don’t have any permanent residency status, I am not planning … yet … to leave Russia. I will see, yeah. So far I will be fighting.
0:43 Someone places documents in front of the camera. BG VOICE: Here is our visa.
NARRATOR: Investigator Artiom Ranchenkov is on this case.
ARTIOM: These are the documents that indicate tight relationship of one of the accused in Tolokonnikova’s case with the foreign state, the Canadian one. [She] had serious views on living not in Russia, but in other state.
NARRATOR: Let’s get back to SIZO No. 6, Lawyer’s Room. (SIZO stands for Sledstvenny Isolator, Detention area for accused, but not yet convicted.)

Even she admits that she’s not Canadian – where’s the issue here?

    • Lisa says:

Sure looks like a Canadian residency card. Perhaps she’s denying it because she fears further repercussions from the Russian government or the police who have her in custody.

But we won’t know until the Canadian government gets involved. She is a political prisoner and she may be a Canadian. Where’s John Baird when you need him?

PR cards expire every five years, so this one was issued in 2011. Apps from Russia take about 2years to process so she applied in 2009 or before. A permanent resident is someone who has acquired permanent resident status by immigrating to Canada, but is not yet a Canadian citizen. Permanent residents have rights and privileges in Canada even though they remain citizens of their home country. In order to maintain permanent resident status, they must fulfill specified residency obligations.

  5. Even if the PR card is real – she is not a Canadian citizen, still citizen of Russia.

    Hi Lisa,

I see that you are correct. I must have mixed up your post and Mr. Kinsella’s. In any case, once I learned it was actually from a Rossiya documentary broadcast in April, and not something original unearthed by you, it became a choice, rather than an imperative, to credit you and I still had the other reservations.
I also tried to contact the person who uploaded that clip to YouTube. Had he responded, and had it not been a Rossiya documentary that he had uploaded, I would have given him the credit.
Anyway. Thank you very much for taking be time to write back.
    Have a good weekend,
    Joanna

    • Joanna Smith says:

Whoops. Commented on wrong post. You get the idea. -JS

    • Lisa says:

I never claimed it was unearthed by me. But I, and a couple other bloggers, had it before traditional media (with the exception of CBC many months ago, which went seemingly unnoticed) yesterday. Other media credited sources. You didn’t.

My point is one greater than my post and your subsequent story. It’s about how bloggers, once relegated to the back benches are, sometimes, competing with mainstream journalists, like yourself.

I take nothing away from your skill level – I respect your experience and your style – but in the wild west that is the Internet, where, and how, we get our information is changing.

      Have a good night.

One more thing i remembered . From what i do remember about 1 fact that what in praying said to GOD in praying is between the person and GOD and that would be if it was thinking ( i hate the idea something or someone thinks they could listen to what you think because freedom of thinking and or thinking is someone’s right to think that is of the human body and would be a violations of the body like the mind raping done by governments what was called PROJECT BLUEBIRD . ) but the rights to freedom and praying now it turns into that the entire thing that happened was on HOLY GROUND and that when a persons prays since there was not any physical crimes commited would be the courts and government violating the church and the people’s rights to freedom of expression by song in praying and in praying to a hold spirit and thats what happened because the persons singing a song was praying to a holy spirit and thats a violation that the church would complain of persons praying for help in fear of the leadership and now it turned into that the courts has violated the rights of worship and the holy ground when the persons was arrested for freedom of praying and song and dance in the expression in praying on holy ground . theres the situation the courts violated the church and GOD deciding what can be prayed for on HOLY GROUNDS . Did everyone notice as before one thing keeps going in circles the spainish Inquisition and then the crusade and now thru Islam and the muslim that they claim for the holy spirit in what ever way shape or form they so choose that they have attacked another religion or race and that the jews did it to Jesus and others and thats why i mention the jew religion because they made a deal with the devil and then threw a fit to have jesus hert and killed because he did not do as they wanted and or accept what they was doing to other people and how he felt what they did was wronge and then used the religion power to have him hert and killed and or murdered . Thats what i see going on hear and that the violation for someone not doing no physical damages to the church and in praying they are being punished for praying in their form on holy ground and thats why it would be considered a violation of the people by the government and why the head office of the catholic did not step in and say something to that priest and the others and request the court to stop is only showing what was the power play and actions to demand by church to punish those unless they do what they say like other religions are doing and that they who demand by the church is directly violating what they preach and the persons they preach about and they violated GOD by letting or having those women charged and put in jail . did no one tell them the abuse and crimes of the crusade was learned it was wronge and was over a long time ago . remember the man was going to sacrifies his own son for god and god stoped him saying he was testing him and the man was thankful and god was happy to have a someone who prayed and worshiped him and when they was told to do this or that they never listened to GOD and persons got killed and hert because the abuse of power is still seen thru the world leaders and even into the united states leaders and other countrys . Is it god that guides them no do they have a excuse NO and do we try to vote when we can to make it better YES but many do wrong and buy their ways in and they pay with the peoples money and abuse the people and thats what the united nations is for and the world courts is for when it comes to removeing the countrys leaders for doing crimes to the people NOT a court over praying at a church not the way a catholic priest demanded them to pray to GOD . people are not stupid and are not animals and it is wrong to treat them that way .

  8. Daniel says:

Looks like a permanent resident card. The Canadian government probably would get involved if she was actually a citizen but since she isn’t….. What I don’t understand is they seemed all giddy and happy when they were arrested, yes they were standing up for freedom of speech (a good thing)yet when she is asked about her Canadian connection she denies it. As a Canadian I’m offended, I know they’re called Pussy Riot but they should have more balls.
